Benefits of Organic Chocolate

Organic chocolate is like organic everything else; sustainable, part of a healthy and thriving economy in the hands of many, and certainly safer for both workers and consumers than artificial fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides. Organic food growing requires intimate knowledge of the crop rather than a good relationship with your chemicals rep.
A cacao crop requires shade and should be grown under the canopy of other trees. Therefore, the cultivation of cacao encourages a diverse growth of jungle canopy which is good for all the living creatures. The local fauna get habitat, the jungle remains diverse, and the trees providing the shade make oxygen which is good for all of us. When we buy chocolate, especially if we specifically buy organic chocolate, we are supporting this vital sustainability.
We all know organically produced food is infinitely better for us than the ordinary chemically and mechanically processed ingestibles that fill up our supermarkets. In organic food production, we cooperate with nature, rather than thwarting natural processes and tweaking them beyond the point of sustainability. Ultimately, that which is unsustainable is inevitably suicidal. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but then, everything seems accelerated lately, doesn’t it?
When people have a complaint about organic food they’re usually grousing about the price. But if we create the market for it and local organic food production becomes the norm, the price difference won’t matter anymore—factory food will become a thing of the past. (Well, we can dream, can’t we?) Even if it doesn’t, if we buy as much organic produce as possible, there are many benefits, even financial ones. It may cost a little more at the checkout but if we’re healthier, our doctor bills and prescriptions might become negligible.
In the end, buying organically produced food is really the best thing for all of us, and the planet, too. And while for most of us chocolate is an imported food, if we buy organic, that helps mitigate the impact of the transportation.
